Galen Rupp wins the Chicago Marathon

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Galen Rupp won his first major marathon Sunday morning in Chicago, the hometown of his father.

The Nike Oregon Project runner, who has trained under coach Alberto Salazar since he was in the ninth grade, achieved one of his best results. He ran five successive miles in under 4:40 to pull away from the lead pack and win in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 20 seconds.

Rupp's father, Greg, grew up in Chicago and his grandfather worked for The Cracker Jack Company. Galen, 31, is a lifelong Cubs fan.

For more details about Sunday's race, and Jordan Hasay's impressive second-place behind Tirunesh Dibaba, here is Dale Bowman's report in the Chicago Sun-Times.
