Kimetto Sets Course Record in Winning Chicago Marathon

Published by the Chicago Tribune on October 13, 2013

Dennis Kimetto of Kenya took the lead definitively at the start of the 26th mile and went on to win Sunday's Bank of America Chicago Marathon in a course record 2 hours, 3 minutes, 45 seconds.

That was seven seconds ahead of countryman Emmanuel Mutai.

The old course record, 2;04:38, was set by Tsegaye Kedebe of Ethiopia last year.

Kimetto's time was the fourth fastest ever, missing by 22 seconds the world record Wilson Kipsang of Kenya set in Berlin two week ago.

Dathan Ritzenheim (fifth) was the top US finisher in 2:09:47.

Rita Jeptoo of Kenya won the women's title Sunday in an official time of 2:19:57.

Jeptoo was coming off a Boston Marathon victory in 2:26:25.
